Water Hyacinth Covering 8 Hectares of Lake Buyan Begins to be Cleared
An area of approximately 8 hectares in Lake Buyan, Pancasari Village, Sukasada District, Buleleng, has been covered by water hyacinth and weeds. In response, the TNI, alongside the local government and several relevant agencies, has begun cleaning and normalising the lake, starting on Tuesday (9/6/2026).
Brigadier General TNI Ida I Dewa Agung Hadisaputra, Commander of the 163/Wira Satya Military Resort, stated that Lake Buyan was selected as a priority location following inspections of several lakes in Bali, as directed by the Chief of Staff of the Army and the Commander of the IX/Udayana Military Regional Command.
“We checked all the lakes, from Lake Batur, Beratan, Buyungan, to Tamblingan. After the inspection, Lake Buyan is currently covered by water hyacinth and weeds across approximately 8 hectares of the lake’s total 200-hectare area,” said Hadisaputra during the normalisation activities.
He noted that this condition prompted the TNI to take steps for cleaning and normalisation to ensure the lake’s functions are maintained. The activity is supported by the Bali Provincial Government, the River Basin Organisation (BWS), the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), and the local community.
Hadisaputra aims to complete the normalisation process within approximately two months, though he hopes it can be finished sooner thanks to equipment provided by the Chief of Staff of the Army. “Our target is about two months. If it can be faster, that would be better, especially since there is assistance from two pontoons and one conveyor from the Chief of Staff to accelerate this cleaning and normalisation process,” he added.
The Chairman of the Bali Regional House of Representatives (DPRD), Dewa Made Mahayadnya, mentioned that this activity is a follow-up to President Prabowo Subianto’s directives during a national coordination meeting regarding waste management and environmental cleanliness in the regions. He emphasised that synergy between the TNI, local government, BWS, BKSDA, village governments, and the community is key to preserving Lake Buyan as a vital natural resource in Bali.
Meanwhile, the Vice Regent of Buleleng, Gede Supriatna, expressed appreciation for the TNI’s involvement in managing the weeds in Lake Buyan. He noted that the activity significantly assists the preservation efforts of the lake, which is a strategic area in the Buleleng Regency.
Through this normalisation programme, the government hopes that the condition of Lake Buyan can return to its original state, free from the dominance of water hyacinth that potentially disrupts the ecosystem and the lake’s functions.
