Water company reduces service
PURWAKARTA, West Java: The local water company has decided to reduce its output following the discovery of 1,560 tons of fishes floating dead in its water source, the Jatiluhur dam.
Company spokesperson Setiawan Udi said on Sunday that the company decreased the service out of fear of contamination of the water. Antara reported that thousands of dead fishes have made the dam water murky and smelly.
The news agency did not give clear information as to why such a large number of fishes had died, but only said it could be caused by strong alternating currents in this rainy season.
Setiawan said the company would soon restore its' service in Purwakarta by drawing water from Cigoong Spring instead.
The disaster caused a financial loss of Rp 3.4 billion (US$1,483,420) to local fish ponds owners. (swe)
