Watchdog gets award

JAKARTA: The Indonesian Corruption Watch (ICW), an independent
watchdog, was presented an award on Saturday for its zealous
campaign against corruption.

The Suardi Tasrif Award, named after a prominent journalist,
was presented by the Alliance of Independent Journalists to the
ICW coordinator, Teten Masduki, in conjunction with its fifth
anniversary.

However, the alliance's chairman, Lukas Luwarso, said no
journalist was found fit this year to be rewarded the Udin Award,
named after slain journalist Fuad Muhammad Syafruddin who was
killed in 1996. His killer was not found.

Retired chief editor of the previously banned Tempo magazine,
Goenawan Mohamad, said at the commemoration that threats to the
media were continuing.

He said that earlier in the day an executive of a troubled
bank tried to bribe a journalist with Rp 5 million. (anr)
