Waste Volume in Karangasem Increases by 2 Tonnes During Galungan
Waste volume in Karangasem Regency increased by up to 2 tonnes during the Galungan holiday. The waste was predominantly organic remnants from ceremonies, such as used canang offerings.
Monitoring on Thursday morning (18/6/2026) revealed piles of uncollected rubbish at several points in Amlapura city. The Karangasem Environmental Agency (DLH) recorded that the volume of waste in urban areas rose from 29 tonnes on a normal day to 31 tonnes per day during Galungan.
“The increase was 1 to 2 tonnes during the Galungan holiday, so there were still some points where waste had not been collected, such as in the Jalan Sudirman area, Kecicang, and Jasri. However, we can confirm that by this afternoon it had all been collected,” said the Head of the Waste Management Division at DLH Karangasem, I Made Yusta Dwi Mertha, on Thursday (18/6/2026).
Yusta stated that the increase in waste volume had already begun on Penampahan Galungan, the day before Galungan. Despite this, DLH Karangasem did not add extra personnel and instead optimised the waste collection officers on duty that day.
“We optimised the existing officers, but to maximise waste transport to the landfill, we asked three trucks to make two collection trips per day starting two days ago,” Yusta said.
Yusta explained that there has been an adjustment to the waste collection schedule since the rule on separating organic and inorganic waste was implemented. According to him, this waste separation rule has effectively reduced the daily volume of waste entering the Linggasana landfill.
Before the waste separation rules were tightened, he said, the Linggasana landfill could receive up to 35 to 40 tonnes of mixed waste per day. However, since the separation policy was implemented, the amount of waste entering the landfill is now only 29 tonnes per day.
“Hopefully the public will become increasingly disciplined in sorting their waste, so that we can continue to reduce the volume of waste going to the landfill,” Yusta hoped.
