A total of 1,000 tonnes of waste were processed yesterday at Mengwi Integrated Waste Processing Facility in Badung, Bali, but volumes have since fallen in line with daily levels as public awareness to segregate waste increases, said Made Rai Warastuthi, head of the Badung Environmental Service (DLHK Badung), on Tuesday, 19 May 2026.

He said the 900 workers seconded to sort organic and inorganic waste at the Mengwi TPST were previously park and street-cleaning staff of DLHK Badung. That said, there is no ruling out that the scheme could be reintroduced if waste piles up again.

“The sorting staff have been made inactive, but if things change, we will monitor again,” Rai added.

According to Rai, the decline in waste volume demonstrates the optimal performance of the processing machinery and the hard work of the daily sorters before they were stood down. He noted that the reduction in waste around the terminal area and public facilities also aligns with improvements in the system.

“At Mengwi TPST it has levelled off with the equipment operating optimally and our 900 personnel sorting daily. So the sorting output is entirely manageable and we carry it to the landfill (TPA), so stray waste has become less,” Rai said.

Rai explained that periodic evaluations continue with the deployment of a special task force to residential areas across Badung. He said the task force will monitor the readiness of the source-based waste processing system at the smallest level.

He urged all residents to quickly adapt and sort waste independently at home. “There you will see a waste sorting area, sorting is carried out, and finally whether there is or is carrying out organic waste processing. We keep urging or socialising so that all communities prepare for August 1,” he concluded.
