Waste Sorting Movement Reduces Bantargebang Waste by 500 Tonnes per Day
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has announced a reduction in the amount of household waste and waste arriving at the Bantargebang landfill as a result of the waste sorting and processing movement at source, on Monday (31/8).
“I have received a report that there has been a significant decrease, namely in the amount of waste from households and also at Bantargebang. At Bantargebang itself there has been a reduction of approximately 500 tonnes per day,” said Pramono.
He made the remarks at the Local Hero Indonesia Forum 2026 organised by the Indonesia Water Institute.
“Since the waste sorting movement was launched on 10 May 2026, the number of households sorting their waste has increased from 5.31% to 23.14%. Equally important is the management of organic waste, which previously stood at 2,247 waste banks, rising from 1,046 tonnes to 1,432 tonnes,” he continued.
He stated that Jakarta’s waste sorting movement is heading in the right direction. He also asked City Hall to set aside at least one day a week for discussions on waste and to ensure that guests related to waste issues are always received.
Nevertheless, Pramono acknowledged obstacles in the implementation of this movement, such as the stockpiling of residual private waste in inappropriate locations and problems at TPS 3R facilities.
“I truly ask the Head of the Environmental Agency to ensure this handling is not done half-heartedly. This handling sometimes requires us to be firm, and it must be understood in detail,” said Pramono.
