Waste Increases by 20 Percent During Eid, Bandung Mayor Discovers 60 Illegal TPS
Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan revealed that the volume of waste increased by 20 percent during the Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah period in 2026. He also discovered approximately 60 illegal temporary waste disposal sites (TPS) in Bandung City.
“The current waste situation shows that collection routes and schedules have returned to normal. However, daily accumulation still occurs due to the increased waste buildup of around 20 percent,” he stated recently at Leuwipanjang Terminal.
He explained that under normal conditions, the waste volume is 1,500 tons per day. However, from H+1 to H+4, it rose to 1,800 tons per day.
“This creates problems because the accumulation does not decrease significantly. Although it appears to be collected in the morning and evening, new piles emerge the next morning. Thus, new accumulations continue to grow due to the high waste generation,” he said.
Farhan admitted to ongoing efforts to anticipate this by increasing collection capacity, incineration, and organic waste processing at Ciwastra and Gedebage. He added that they are focusing on the prevalence of illegal TPS.
“The main concern is illegal TPS. We will not tolerate illegal TPS, as that would mean condoning legal violations and environmental pollution. We are currently preventing this,” he said.
He expressed appreciation to residents who reported illegal TPS via social media. “Around 60 (illegal TPS),” he disclosed.
Farhan noted that the existence of illegal TPS contributes to uncontrolled waste accumulation. His team has identified these sites to promptly transport the waste, close them, and seek those responsible.
“Anyone proven to be dumping at illegal TPS will be processed legally,” he stated.
