Waspait Village Residents Enthusiastically Welcome Sacrificial Cows on Buru Island
The night of takbir in Waspait Village, Buru Island, Maluku, felt more vibrant than usual on Thursday, 28 May 2026. Despite the late hour, residents of all ages remained around the arrival site of the sacrificial animals, awaiting the truck transporting the cows. From the afternoon, children and adults crowded the area, with some sitting along the village road while others gathered to chat. The chanting of takbir accompanied the villagers’ wait for the eight sacrificial cows destined for Eid al-Adha the following day.
Cheers of joy erupted as the transport vehicle entered the village. Children were particularly enthusiastic, watching the cows being unloaded. “Yeay, we got cows!” shouted several children, jumping with excitement. The atmosphere grew warmer as villagers worked together to lower the animals safely from the truck, some pulling ropes while others provided light using available lamps.
For Waspait residents, the arrival of sacrificial animals is not just an annual ritual before Eid al-Adha but a cherished opportunity for communal bonding each year. The takbir night was further enlivened by a torch parade involving the community, with lanterns illuminating village roads amid echoing takbir chants throughout the night. Children’s laughter filled the air as they played with bamboo cannons, their explosions adding to the festive atmosphere ahead of Eid al-Adha.
