Waskita Karya Undertakes SAR59 Million Ka'bah Ma'taf Renovation Project

PT Waskita Karya (Persero) Tbk is once again undertaking an infrastructure project in the Middle East, specifically in Saudi Arabia. One such project is the renovation of the open area surrounding the Ka’bah, known as the Ma’taf, in the Masjidil Haram.

Waskita Karya’s Corporate Secretary, Ermy Puspa Yunita, stated that the construction project, which has been ongoing since 2013, is part of the King Abdullah Makkah Extension (KAME) valued at SAR59 million (Saudi Riyal). “The work aims to accommodate more people, allowing pilgrims to worship more peacefully and comfortably while there,” Ermy said in a statement on Wednesday, 3 June 2026.

She explained that previously, the Ma’taf could only accommodate 48,000 pilgrims. However, following the renovation, its capacity can hold more than 105,000 pilgrims. For Waskita, expanding the Ma’taf of Masjidil Haram is not merely about executing a project, but a manifestation of the company’s commitment to providing infrastructure that benefits the international community. “Furthermore, Masjidil Haram is a holy and spiritual site that is always a destination for people worldwide,” she added.

Ermy further explained that the methods used to complete this project include formwork slab and cantilever beam, which serve as temporary moulds to create concrete structures according to the desired design, ensuring greater precision while saving time and costs. Additionally, formwork for wall beams is utilised using panel baju, with plywood and wooden struts used for the lower sections.

Ermy emphasised that the Ma’taf is not the only project successfully completed by Waskita Karya in Saudi Arabia. Other notable works include the King Saud Fitness College in 2011, with a contract value of SAR16 million, and the King Saud University of Riyadh Techno Valley & Building Administration College in Riyadh in 2009, valued at SAR50 million. Between 2010 and 2012, Waskita Karya also constructed the 31-storey King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD). “The Jeddah Flyover and King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Jeddah are also part of the company’s achievements,” Ermy noted.

She stated that the development of several projects in Saudi Arabia strengthens Waskita Karya’s position as a contractor with 65 years of experience, having completed more than 100 infrastructure projects in the last decade.
