Was CCTV Deliberately Shut Off During Jakarta Protest? Pramono Responds

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has denied allegations that his administration deliberately switched off closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras during a protest in the capital on Thursday, August 27.

“There was no attempt to switch off CCTV cameras or anything like that because everything was monitored, and we have the data to prove it,” Pramono said in South Jakarta on Monday.

Pramono, however, confirmed that several CCTV cameras were damaged during the protest, allegedly by unidentified individuals.

He instructed his officials to investigate the damage and identify those responsible, including for an incident in the Pejompongan area.

“We are certainly looking into it now, including what happened in Pejompongan. But overall, I have to say that almost all of our public facilities continued to operate properly during the protest,” Pramono said.

Earlier, Pramono had instructed Jakarta Communications, Informatics and Statistics Agency (Diskominfotik) head Marulina Dewi to identify those responsible for damaging CCTV cameras during the August 27 protest.

Once the perpetrators are identified, Pramono said they should be handed over to law enforcement for further action.

He said vandalism of public facilities could not be justified.

“As I have said repeatedly, in a democratic country, protests are allowed as long as they follow the proper procedures. But if they involve vandalism, violent acts or other forms of disorder, then of course there is no reason for society to support them,” Pramono said.
