Warring villages asked to calm down

WAIKABUBAK, East Nusa Tenggara: Governor Piet A. Tallo has asked the residents of two warring villages in Sumba to cease hostilities which first erupted here on Nov. 5 last year.

"The trouble must end and the two tribes should be at peace," he said in a ceremony to mark a truce between the Loli and Wewewa tribes in Waikabubak on Monday.

Antara reported that the two tribal chiefs promised to maintain peace during the ceremony, which was attended by around 5,000 local people. The unrest has so far claimed 27 lives. (29)
