Warning: Waves up to 4 Metres Still Threaten DIY Waters until 22 August

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Yogyakarta has forecast high waves in the southern waters of the Special Region of Yogyakarta over the coming days. Waves are expected to reach up to four metres until 22 August.

Forecaster Rahmad Tauladani from the BMKG Yogyakarta Meteorological Station said that between 19 and 22 August, waves of 2.5 to 4 metres are likely to occur in the southern waters covering Kulon Progo, Bantul, and Gunungkidul.

“Waves of 2.50 to 4.0 metres are likely to occur in the waters of Kulon Progo, Bantul, Gunungkidul, and the southern Indian Ocean off Java,” Rahmad said when contacted on Thursday (20/8/2026).

Rahmad explained that the high waves are caused by easterly winds in the southern waters. As a result, high waves are expected to occur over the next few days.

“The potential for high waves is influenced by the dynamics of marine atmospheric conditions around the southern region of Java, such as easterly winds with speeds reaching 20 knots (38 km/h), which have the potential to significantly increase wave heights in the coming days,” he explained.

Rahmad urged members of the public planning activities around the southern waters to remain vigilant. He asked the public to continue complying with instructions from authorised officers in the area.

“Fishermen, barge/ferry vessels, and small boats are advised to increase their vigilance and avoid sailing unless absolutely necessary,” he said.

“Avoid swimming, fishing, or water sports activities that could be dangerous in the southern waters of Yogyakarta. Always comply with instructions from local officers and always monitor weather and wave information from official BMKG sources,” he concluded.
