Warning from Incoming PM Peter Magyar to Netanyahu: Hungary Will Not Withdraw from ICC
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BUDAPEST – Hungary’s new government plans to suspend the withdrawal process from the International Criminal Court (ICC), according to Tisza party leader Peter Magyar, the winner of the election, on Monday (20/4/2026). Magyar stated that his government intends to stop the process by no later than 2 June and maintain Hungary’s membership in the ICC. “I have conveyed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that we will not withdraw from the ICC,” Magyar said during a press conference. Magyar also added that ICC member states are obliged to comply with arrest warrants issued by the court, including detaining wanted individuals when they are in their territory. The ICC issued an arrest warrant against Netanyahu in 2024. Previously, the Hungarian parliament approved the withdrawal from the ICC in May 2025. At that time, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban assessed that the ICC had changed from a neutral institution into a politicised organisation. In November 2024, the ICC issued arrest warrants against Netanyahu and former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes in the Gaza Strip. The ICC’s Pre-Trial Chamber rejected Israel’s objections regarding the court’s jurisdiction to investigate the situation in Palestine and issued warrants against its citizens.
