Waringinkurung Landfill in Serang Has Been On Fire Since Friday; Flames Beginning to Subside

The Banten Regional Police have stated that the fire occurring at the landfill in Waringinkurung Village, Serang Regency, Banten, which began on Friday (28/8), started to subside on Sunday (30/8).

“At this moment, the fire points have begun to die down,” said the Head of Public Relations for the Banten Regional Police, Kombes Maruli Hutamoso, when confirmed on Sunday.

Maruli noted that fire brigade officers would continue to spray areas that are still emitting smoke this morning. He added that excavators would be used to push the piles of waste while firefighters target the remaining smoky spots.

According to official data, the total area burnt is approximately 2,500 square metres. He stated that the authorities are still investigating the cause of the blaze.

Previously, the Integrated Waste Treatment Site (TPSA) in Waringinkurung Village, Serang Regency, caught fire on Friday (28/8) evening. The fire first appeared around 6:00 PM WIB, noticed by local residents returning from collecting grass for livestock feed. Residents subsequently reported the fire to the Waringinkurung Police Sub-district to initiate firefighting efforts.

“Officers from the Waringinkurung Police Sub-district confirmed with local residents; the cause of the incident is not yet known. Officers have arrived at the scene, and efforts are underway to extinguish the flames,” said the Chief of Waringinkurung Police, Iptu Hari Purwanto, on Saturday (29/8).

Hari mentioned that because the location is far from residential areas, neither the public nor the police personnel could determine the exact cause of the fire at the TPSA. However, the Waringinkurung site was formerly a red brick production site that was later repurposed as a waste disposal site by the local community.
