Warehouse Fire Near Kebayoran Lama Market: 22 Fire Engines Deployed

A fire broke out in a building suspected to be a storage warehouse on Jalan Kramat I, near Kebayoran Lama Market, Grogol Selatan, South Jakarta, on Tuesday evening (28/7). Firefighters were still struggling to contain the flames, which had not been fully extinguished by nightfall.

The South Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service (Gulkarmat) deployed dozens of personnel and a fleet of vehicles to handle the incident. Firefighting efforts commenced shortly after a report was received from the public.

“We deployed 22 units, or 90 personnel, to extinguish the fire,” said Asril Rizal, Head of the South Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service, in Jakarta on Tuesday.

According to Asril, the fire report was received by officers at 6.48 p.m. Western Indonesian Time. The team then proceeded to the location and began the extinguishing process at around 6.57 p.m. Western Indonesian Time.

As of the writing of this report, flames were still visible at the site, prompting officers to continue their efforts to prevent the fire from spreading to other buildings around the market area.

“The situation is red, meaning it is still burning,” he said.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, as does information regarding possible casualties and the extent of the losses incurred.

Asril stated that his team was still gathering data on any fatalities or injuries, the cause of the fire, and the estimated losses.

Based on observations at the location around 8.09 p.m. Western Indonesian Time, several fire engines were still at the scene with officers continuously spraying water onto the hotspots. Meanwhile, police personnel were managing traffic around Kebayoran Lama Market to anticipate congestion caused by the large number of residents crowding the area to watch the firefighting operation.
