US President Donald Trump has admitted he is considering the possibility of increasing the escalation of war against Iran. He made this statement during an interview with the US media outlet Fox News on Sunday.

“My question is, if and when will I destroy that entire country? They had better behave,” said Trump, as quoted by Reuters on Tuesday (22/9/2026).

“Very big things will happen in that war,” he added.

Nevertheless, he noted that he remains “open” to meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who is scheduled to attend the UN General Assembly in New York this week.

This is not Trump’s first threat. He has repeatedly suggested the possibility of large-scale military escalation during the conflict that began following US and Israeli attacks on 28 February, though he has yet to realise these proposals.

In April, Trump issued a similar threat, stating at the time that “the entire civilisation (of Iran) will be destroyed tonight, and will never be able to be recovered.”

Previously, Iran’s military central command stated that any new attack would trigger continuous retaliation against US bases and interests. It was also stated that Washington’s regional allies would be considered parties involved in the conflict.

The Iranian military added that they possess information regarding attack preparations, though they did not provide further details regarding said intelligence. The Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, stated that Iran must continue to fight while simultaneously negotiating to repel its enemies and consolidate any achievements through diplomacy.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei, stated last weekend that Tehran has presented seven conditions to Washington to commence negotiations. He later revealed to Al Jazeera that these conditions include an end to the war on all fronts, the unfreezing of Iranian funds, and the cessation of the US naval blockade. Qatar has acted as a mediator.

“Trump’s threats will yield nothing. We are prepared to face a decisive war,” said Rezaei.

Amidst this situation, US diplomatic missions across the Middle East issued security warnings last weekend. The agency urged American citizens to increase vigilance in the face of the risk of further escalation. The warning also highlighted the outbreak of fighting between Saudi Arabia and Houthi groups in Yemen.
