War Alert! NATO Jets Intercept Russian Spy Plane
NATO fighter jets from Poland have successfully intercepted a Russian military reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea, approximately 30 kilometres off the coast of Warsaw. This incident is the latest in a series of similar encounters involving Moscow’s military aircraft.
Quoting TVP World on Tuesday (1/9/2026), the Polish Minister of Defence, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, confirmed the event. The Il-20 type jet was intercepted before noon north of Łeba, a coastal town in northern Poland.
The Il-20 is known as a military reconnaissance aircraft specifically used to collect intelligence data regarding radar, communication, and air defence systems. However, Poland ensured that no violation of its territory occurred, as the jet remained over international waters.
“Russia is once again testing our deterrence and air defence systems,” stated Kosiniak-Kamysz.
In fact, the activity of Russian military aircraft manoeuvring near the Polish Baltic coast has been reported to be increasing. Previously, in mid-July, Polish jets also had to intercept Russian air fleets for three consecutive days, including Il-20 reconnaissance planes and Su-30 fighter jets.
Other interceptions of Il-20 aircraft also occurred in late July and during several days in early August, although none entered Polish airspace. Such incidents have become more common since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, during which Russian military aircraft frequently fly near NATO airspace without submitting official flight plans or activating their transponders.
These dangerous, stealthy flights regularly force Polish and allied fighter jets to scramble for takeoff to identify and monitor the Russian fleets. Russian aerial military activity in the region is also being closely monitored through NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission, where allied fighter jets routinely patrol to secure the airspace of Baltic nations.
Meanwhile, Poland has now established a high state of alert regarding potential airspace violations after a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile fell in eastern Poland during a large-scale attack on Ukraine in late July. Polish officials revealed that the lethal missile carried a significant amount of explosives.
The missile reportedly exploded in a field near Tarnawa-Kolonia in the eastern region, approximately 80 kilometres from the Ukrainian border. The explosion left a crater several metres wide.
