Wanam National Strategic Project Poised to Strengthen National Food Security

The Wanam National Strategic Project (PSN) in Merauke, South Papua, is considered to have significant potential to strengthen national food security whilst accelerating development in eastern Indonesia. The project is expected to create a new centre of economic growth, open up employment opportunities, and improve the welfare of communities in the South Papua region. Amid the need to strengthen national food supplies and reduce inter-regional development disparities, South Papua is deemed to have the resources that allow the region to develop into one of Indonesia’s new food production centres. Researcher at Merah Pusaka Stratejik Indonesia (MPSI), Fathan Putra Mardela, said the development of the Wanam area should be viewed as part of the government’s long-term efforts to build the foundations of food security whilst expanding equitable national development. “South Papua has great potential to become one of Indonesia’s new food barns. If managed well, this project will not only strengthen national food security but also create jobs, accelerate infrastructure development, and drive the local community’s economic growth,” he said. According to Fathan, the infrastructure development accompanying the project also has the potential to improve regional connectivity, which has been a challenge in several parts of Papua. Improvements in road access, transport, logistics networks, and basic services are believed to have a knock-on effect on improving the community’s quality of life. “Development must be seen as an instrument to open access. When access is opened, education becomes easier to reach, health services improve, the distribution of goods becomes smoother, and the community’s economic opportunities develop,” he said. Nonetheless, he stressed that successful development must go hand in hand with the involvement of indigenous peoples and respect for the rights of local communities. According to him, open communication and community participation are important factors to ensure the benefits of development are felt equitably. Fathan also urged the public to view the various dynamics of development in Papua objectively and proportionally. He said that the challenges arising in every development project need to be managed properly without neglecting the main goal of improving community welfare.
