Wamena and autonomy
Wamena and autonomy
From Media Indonesia
As part of Irian Jaya province, Wamena is richly endowed with natural resources such as natural gas, oil and forestry products. Unfortunately, most of its people live in poverty. The reason is that the central administration has taken much of the region's natural wealth and only an insignificant amount of it is returned to Wamena people.
Therefore, local councillors have met relevant authorities several times in order that Wamena might become an autonomous region. While all the necessary requirements have been met, a definitive answer about Wamena becoming a special autonomous region has yet to emerge.
In this context, allow me to call on all Wamena residents in particular and all people of Irian Jaya/Papua in general as well as the members of the People's Consultative Assembly/the House of Representatives (MPR/DPR) representing Irian Jaya, to support this struggle so that our dream of having a special autonomous region of Wamena will soon become a reality.
