Wallet-Straining Prices: Bird's Eye Chilli Now Reaches Rp68,000 per Kg

The National Strategic Food Price Information Centre (PIHKS), managed by Bank Indonesia, recorded that the prices of several food commodities remained at a high level on Friday, 5 June 2026. One commodity of particular concern is red bird’s eye chilli, which reached Rp68,000 per kilogram (kg) at the national retail level.

In addition to red bird’s eye chilli, the price of chicken eggs remains around Rp28,500 per kg. This food price data was compiled based on PIHPS monitoring released at 09:33 WIB.

Fluctuations in food prices serve as a key indicator monitored by the public, especially ahead of periods of increased household consumption. Several essential commodities, including rice, onions, chillies, meat, sugar, and cooking oil, are showing varied prices across national retail markets.

High Chilli Prices

According to PIHPS data, red bird’s eye chilli is one of the highest-priced commodities compared to other types of chilli. The price of red bird’s eye chilli was recorded at Rp68,000 per kg, while curly red chilli was sold at Rp62,450 per kg and large red chilli stood at the level of Rp61,350 per kg. For green bird’s eye chilli, the price was recorded lower than the red variety, at Rp44,000 per kg. The high price of chilli remains a concern as this commodity is an essential staple used widely in daily consumption.

Shallot and Garlic Prices

PIHPS also noted that the prices of shallots and garlic remain relatively stable at the retail level. Shallots are priced at Rp54,350 per kg, while garlic is sold at Rp40,200 per kg. Both commodities play a vital role in both household needs and the culinary business sector.

For the rice commodity, recorded prices continue to vary based on quality. According to PIHPS data, the prices for lower-quality rice are as follows:
