Wall Collapse Injures 10 During Independence Day Walk in Sleman

A perimeter wall collapsed and injured at least ten residents who were resting after participating in a community walk in the Minomartani housing complex, Ngaglik, Sleman. The incident occurred on Sunday morning near the boundary of SDN Minomartani 2 state primary school.

Sleman Police public relations officer Iptu Argo Anggoro explained that the victims had been sitting and resting after a walk and exercise session held to commemorate the 81st anniversary of Indonesian independence. The wall, which was 1.5 metres high and 20 metres long, suddenly collapsed onto the group.

The ten injured victims included seven women and three men. They were evacuated and received medical treatment at Condongcatur Hospital, Hermina Hospital, and UAD Hospital, with some later referred for further care.

Initial investigations revealed the wall, believed to have been built around 1980, lacked a proper foundation and adequate steel reinforcement. Police confirmed no one was touching or leaning against the wall at the time of the collapse, and the exact cause remains under investigation.

Bambang Kuntoro, Head of the Sleman Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), stated that approximately 170 to 200 residents had taken part in the event. He noted that the area was popular for resting due to its shade. Evacuation was carried out swiftly with the help of local residents, though ambulances took around 15 to 20 minutes to arrive. The government will cover all medical expenses for victims who are not registered with the national health insurance scheme (BPJS).
