A worker was killed when a wall collapsed during the demolition of a house in Sleman yesterday. The following is an account of the moments leading up to the incident.

The fatal incident occurred in Jering Hamlet, Sidorejo, Godean, Sleman, on Thursday (9/7) at 10.15am local time. There were two victims in the incident.

The victim who died was a construction worker with the initials T (50), a resident of Ngluwar, Magelang. Meanwhile, his colleague, with the initials Y (35), was injured and is receiving treatment at PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Hospital.

The Head of Public Relations at Sleman Police, Inspector Argo Anggoro, said the incident occurred during the demolition of a house. At the time, the wall of the house suddenly collapsed and struck two workers.

“During the demolition process, the wall of the house suddenly collapsed and struck two workers who were nearby,” said Argo when contacted on Thursday (9/7/2026).

Local residents reportedly provided assistance to both victims. However, T suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Based on preliminary statements, both victims had been demolishing the house for around 10 days along with several other workers. Our initial suspicion is that the old wall, which stood about 3 metres tall and 6 metres wide, collapsed because its condition had become fragile,” he explained.

“It is suspected that the old wall collapsed due to the deteriorating condition of its construction,” he added.

After receiving the report, police immediately went to the scene to process the crime scene, take statements from witnesses, and conduct further investigation.

“Before work begins, make sure the condition of the building’s structure has been inspected, use personal protective equipment, and carry out demolition in accordance with proper procedures to prevent workplace accidents that could result in loss of life,” Argo urged.
