Walhi demands police chief be fired

JAKARTA: The Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) has demanded National Police chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar dismiss and replace South Sulawesi Police chief Insp. Gen. Yusuf Manggabarani over the Bulukumba incident in which police killed three people.

Walhi executive director Longgena Ginting said on Monday that Yusuf intentionally let his subordinates shoot at the Bulukumba residents, who were protesting the occupation of a disputed plot of land by a plantation company on July 21 and Oct. 3.

The National Commission for Human Rights (Komnas HAM) said it found gross human rights violations in the first incident, in which two people were killed. --JP
