Wage regulations largely unheeded

TEGAL, Central Java: Up to 75 percent of companies in the province fail to pay the Rp 2,700 (US$1.2) minimum daily wage to workers as regulations require.

The violations of the minimum wage regulation could incite industrial strikes in the future, the head of the labor section of the provincial manpower office, Rudjito, warned yesterday.

He said his office planned take actions to make companies abide by the regulations and improve communications between workers, employers and the government.

He described the labor conditions in the province as deplorable, with many companies paying their workers Rp 1,500 per day, Antara reported.(rms)
