Wae Rebo Tourism Village in NTT Reopens After M 7.7 Earthquake

The Wae Rebo tourism destination in Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), has reopened to tourist visits starting today. The destination, often dubbed the paradise above the clouds, had previously been closed since 15 August 2026, or nearly two weeks, due to a magnitude 7.7 earthquake.

“It reopens starting today,” said Mikael Tonso, Chairman of the Wae Rebo Cultural Preservation Institute, on Tuesday morning (1/9/2026).

Previously, Wae Rebo was temporarily closed due to the potential for landslides along the trekking route after the earthquake shook the Flores region starting 15 August.

Taking into account the results of post-earthquake condition monitoring, the management decided to trial the reopening of Wae Rebo tourism visit activities on a limited and gradual basis.

“In its implementation, the condition of the trekking route, the environment, and the natural situation will continue to be monitored for the safety of visitors and the community,” Mikael explained.

“If conditions in the field are again deemed unsafe, visit activities can be halted or closed again at any time,” he added.

He urged all visitors to follow the instructions of officers and guides and to consider travel conditions before visiting.

“Safety of life is the top priority,” Mikael stressed.

Wae Rebo is situated at an altitude of 1,000 metres above sea level. Wae Rebo is often dubbed the paradise above the clouds. There are seven traditional houses that serve as icons of the tourism village, namely the cone-shaped Mbaru Niang.

Wae Rebo also offers beautiful natural landscapes and a unique culture. Tourists can also experience the hospitality of the local residents upon arrival.
