W. Sumatra on literacy campaign
PADANG, West Sumatra: All people between the ages of 10 and 44 in the province will be able to read, write and speak the Indonesian language by 1999, a local official said Saturday.
More than 150,000 people aged between 10 and 44 have become literate since the local government embarked on a literacy campaign in 1983, said M. Nasir, an official from the provincial education and culture ministry office here.
Among the government efforts to promote literacy in the province is the provision of tutors and text books for participants in literacy courses, he said as reported by Antara.
Nasir said his office will be more pro-active in finding illiterate residents to be sent to the courses.
Most of the province's remaining illiterate people live in the regencies of Solok, Pasaman and Pesisir Selatan, he said. (rms)
