W. Sumatra gets new governor
PADANG, West Sumatra: Brig. Gen. (ret) Muchlis Ibrahim was sworn in yesterday as the governor of West Sumatra for the 1997/2002 term, replacing Hasan Basri Durin, Antara reported.
Minister of Home Affairs Moch. Yogie S.M. presided over the inauguration ceremony yesterday. The 55-year-old governor will now lead the province of 4.3 million people.
A number of prominent people hailing from the province, including former environment minister Emil Salim and Minister of Manpower Abdul Latief, attended the ceremony. (swe)
