W. Jakarta to have new garbage dumps

In order to accommodate the increasing amount of waste in West Jakarta, the city administration is planning to build permanent garbage dumps on 50 hectares of land in Sepatan and Sindang Sono, Tangerang.

The head of the mayoralty sanitation office, Zainal Husein, was quoted by Antara yesterday as saying that the project is now being studied by the governor's office.

Pending the completion of the project's development, the existing garbage dumps in Kamal and Kapuk, which occupy a total area of 15 hectares, will still be used despite strong objection from the area residents.

Kamal and Kapuk residents have repeatedly called on the mayoralty administration to close the smelly garbage dumps, which are now surrounded by housing complexes. (has)
