Belgrade (ANTARA) - Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic signed and submitted his resignation letter on Sunday (27/9), ending his term as president.

“I am now signing the text which reads as follows: ‘Based on Article 116, paragraph 5 of the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia, I hereby submit my resignation from the office of President of the Republic.’ … Ana, this is submitted to Parliament, and tomorrow you will attend the handover,” said Vucic.

According to the Constitution and Serbian laws regarding the presidency, the presidential term ends once the resignation letter is officially received by the National Assembly, without requiring approval.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Ana Brnabic, will subsequently carry out presidential duties for a maximum of three months and is required to hold presidential elections within that period.

Vucic also stated that he will participate in the upcoming snap parliamentary election scheduled for 25 October as an ordinary citizen.

On 5 September, the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) nominated Vucic as the head of the electoral list and as a candidate for Prime Minister in the upcoming snap parliamentary election.

Following the election on 25 October, the process of forming a new government will commence. The acting president, after consulting with representatives of the elected electoral list, will propose a candidate for Prime Minister to the National Assembly.

The candidate will then present the government programme and the list of cabinet members, which must be approved by a majority of all members of Parliament.

Born in Belgrade in 1970, Vucic has previously served as Minister of Defence, First Deputy Prime Minister, and Prime Minister.

He was elected president in 2017 and re-elected in 2022. According to the Constitution, the presidential term is five years, with a maximum limit of two terms per person.
