Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, has strongly emphasised the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the education sector. In his directive, the Vice President asserted that AI must become a catalyst for creativity and learning, rather than a tool for committing plagiarism, spreading hoaxes, or violating privacy.

Through a post on his official Instagram account, Gibran invited all elements of education, from students to teachers, not to be mere spectators in the massive wave of digital transformation. He encouraged Indonesians to become ‘players’ and masters of the technology in order to face global challenges.

Vice President Gibran likened AI to a personal assistant capable of simplifying various complex tasks, such as data searching, mastering foreign languages, and simplifying mathematical formulas. However, he provided a critical note that this technology should not erode the critical thinking skills of the younger generation.

‘AI must be seen as a tool to accelerate the learning process, not a medium that triggers laziness,’ Gibran stressed. He emphasised the importance of maintaining independent thinking skills amidst the convenience offered by intelligent algorithms.

Mastery of AI technology is considered a key factor in realising the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision. Gibran asked teachers and parents not to be awkward in adapting to the pace of technology. With wise utilisation, AI can help educators present more applicable and engaging material for students.

As a concrete step in national governance, the Vice President revealed that the Indonesian Government has completed UNESCO’s Readiness Assessment Methodology. This step aims to measure the extent of Indonesia’s readiness in managing the ethics and implementation of AI in the future.

‘Master the technology, uphold the ethics. Let us make AI a bridge towards a more advanced, smarter, and more dignified Indonesia,’ Gibran concluded.
