German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen (VW) has launched a recall campaign for 200,000 Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) units related to issues with steering rack mounting bolts.

According to reports from CarsCoops on Tuesday, a total of 208,724 vehicles must be recalled because the bolts securing the steering rack are prone to corrosion and potential breakage. If these bolts fail, the steering rack will rely on only one remaining bolt, which, under certain conditions, could lead to damage to the vehicle’s front frame.

The recall involves three specific models: 85,713 units of the 2018 VW Tiguan, 82,601 units of the 2018-2019 VW Atlas, and 40,410 units of the 2019-2021 Audi Q3.

VW noted that drivers might hear unusual creaking or knocking sounds from the front of the vehicle before a failure in the steering rack mounting system occurs. Interestingly, the potential damage is said to be more likely when the vehicle is moving at low speeds, particularly during parking when the load on the steering rack is relatively high, unlike when the vehicle is travelling on motorways.

VW is understood to have first become aware of the issue in October 2024, though the recall was only announced nearly two years later. As a corrective measure, all affected vehicles will receive a replacement for the right-side steering rack bolt.

The replacement bolts will feature a coating with better corrosion resistance to reduce the risk of damage and ensure the steering rack remains securely attached to the vehicle’s front frame. This procedure will be carried out regardless of whether the vehicle is currently exhibiting symptoms of damage.
