Jakarta (ANTARA) - Volkswagen, through its FAW-Volkswagen partnership, is preparing to introduce its latest electric vehicle concept named Jetta X in China on 21 April. According to Arena EV on Saturday, based on illustrative images shared by the company, the Jetta X appears as a large, sporty-styled SUV or crossover vehicle. The launch of this concept comes amid a major transformation of the Jetta brand in China. Recently, the brand began new operations in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, through a company named FAW Volkswagen Jetta Automotive Technology Co Ltd. With its own entity, Jetta gains greater flexibility in business decisions and product development to compete more swiftly in China’s electric vehicle market. Volkswagen continues to support the brand through global research and the provision of electric vehicle components. The Jetta X forms part of the company’s medium-term expansion plan. By 2028, Jetta targets launching five new models, four of which will be in the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) category, encompassing pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. This step demonstrates Jetta’s accelerated shift towards electrification. Although the official price and dimensions of the Jetta X have not been announced, current Jetta SUV models in China, such as the VS5 and VS7, are sold in the range of 85,000 yuan to 120,000 yuan. The electric version is expected to be priced higher, considering the relatively expensive battery production costs. Jetta has also set an ambitious target of 400,000 to 500,000 units in annual sales. To achieve this, the new electric vehicle lineup is expected to attract young consumers seeking modern features at more affordable prices. Jetta’s first mass-produced NEV model from the new development is expected to debut in the third quarter of this year and go on sale in China in the fourth quarter.
