JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The issue of the request for overflight clearance to allow US aircraft to traverse Indonesian airspace continues to be a topic of discourse.

The Indonesian Ministry of Defence (Kemenhan) states that the Letter of Intent (LoI) or statement of intent regarding the overflight clearance proposal from the US side is still in the internal review stage by the government.

“In the discussion process, Indonesia has made several important adjustments and emphasised that the document is non-binding and does not automatically take effect,” said the Head of the Defence Information Bureau of Kemenhan, Brigadier General TNI Rico Ricardo Sirait, on Tuesday (14/4/2026).

“And it still requires further discussion through applicable technical mechanisms and national procedures,” Rico added.

Amid the internal review process, Rico explained that Indonesian Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin gathered several retired TNI generals on Friday (24/4/2026).

Prominent names who attended that moment include TNI General (Ret.) Wiranto, TNI General (Ret.) Gatot Nurmantyo, TNI General (Ret.) Andika Muhammad Perkasa, TNI General (Ret.) Dudung Abdurachman, TNI General (Ret.) Agum Gumelar, TNI General (Ret.) Djamari Chaniago, and TNI Admiral (Ret.) Yudo Margono.

TNI Chief of Staff General Agus Subiyanto, Deputy TNI Chief of Staff General Tandyo Budi Revita, and the Chiefs of Staff from each branch.

Defence Minister Sjafrie, Rico said, received several inputs and considerations from the gathered retired generals.
