The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) has recorded a decline in both foreign and domestic tourist arrivals to Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) in January 2026, accompanied by falling hotel occupancy rates across the province.

Wahyudin, Head of BPS NTB, stated that the room occupancy rate (TPK) for starred hotels fell 6.97 percentage points in January 2026, whilst non-starred hotels and other accommodation facilities saw occupancy decline by 4.52 percentage points. “This decline is primarily attributable to the conclusion of the Christmas and New Year holiday period (Nataru) and school holidays,” Wahyudin explained during a press briefing in Mataram on Monday, 2 March 2026.

The data reveals that guest numbers at starred hotels in January 2026 reached 101,179 people, representing a month-on-month decrease of 17.98 per cent. By contrast, non-starred hotel guests totalled 123,411 people, showing a 9 per cent increase.

International visitor arrivals through Zainuddin Abdul Madjid International Airport (Bizam) in January 2026 declined 18.27 per cent to 7,714 people. ASEAN tourists continued to dominate arrivals with 2,969 visitors, followed by European tourists (2,005), non-ASEAN Asian visitors (751), Americans (287), Oceania residents (238), African visitors (42), and Middle Eastern visitors (13). Malaysia led in country-of-origin statistics with 2,282 visitors, followed by Singapore (461) and Germany (340).

Domestic tourism to NTB also fell 10.80 per cent, with 1,194,306 domestic visitors recorded in January 2026, compared to 1,228,924 visits in December 2025. According to Wahyudin, 94.71 per cent of domestic tourists were intra-provincial visitors from various regencies and cities within NTB, whilst 6.29 per cent came from other provinces. Domestic visitation was predominantly driven by tourists from Bali, East Java, West Java, Jakarta, and Central Java.
