Visiting PT Garam Factory: Zulhas Confident Indonesia Will Achieve Salt Self-Sufficiency by 2027
Jakarta – Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan (Zulhas) is confident the government will achieve salt self-sufficiency by 2027. This was revealed during a visit to a salt production centre in East Java.
Zulhas, during his visit to PT Garam in Sampang District, Madura, East Java, emphasised the government’s continued commitment to promoting the development and strengthening of salt production facilities across various regions in Indonesia to increase national production capacity.
He stated that in accordance with Government Regulation Number 17 of 2025 concerning the Acceleration of National Salt Industry Development, the transformation of the salt industry is an important step in accelerating the realisation of national salt self-sufficiency.
“The government is targeting domestic production to meet the nation’s salt needs by 2027,” said Zulhas, as quoted from an Instagram post on Tuesday (10 March 2026).
At the technical ministry level, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries is continuing strategic measures by inventorying more than 10,000 hectares of land with potential as salt farming cultivation sites, and is collaborating with the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning and the Rote Ndao Regency Government.
The implementation of land management, financing to develop the land, and the formulation of regulations are strategic steps that must be completed promptly by the government in support of achieving salt self-sufficiency by 2027.
