Visit to Tebuireng: Zulhas Aims to Accelerate MBG in Pesantren

JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan, or Zulhas, has affirmed that the government will accelerate the implementation of the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme in pesantren.

The statement was made during a visit to Tebuireng Pesantren in Jombang, East Java, on Thursday (9/4/2026).

Zulhas views pesantren as playing a crucial role in promoting community-based food self-sufficiency. This role is evident in strengthening the economy, mutual cooperation, and education for the community.

“We are still and will continue to accelerate the implementation of MBG in pesantren, as part of efforts to meet the nutritional needs of santri and strengthen food security,” Zulhas said in his official statement on Friday (10/4/2026).

Zulhas believes that food security at the community level is closely linked to national food security. Unstable global conditions also affect the food supply chain.

Conflicts in various countries are seen as potentially disrupting global food distribution. This situation is pushing the government to bolster domestic food self-sufficiency.

“In a global situation full of uncertainty, we must strengthen national food self-sufficiency,” Zulhas stated.

The government also emphasises the importance of collaboration with ulama and the community. Efforts to build food self-sufficiency cannot be done alone.

“The government cannot operate alone; it needs synergy with ulama and the community,” he added.

Zulhas noted that the moment serves as a reminder that food fulfilment is related to humanitarian values and concern for the community.

Santri in pesantren are one of the beneficiary groups of the MBG programme. The number of recipients in pesantren is still limited compared to formal schools.

The government continues to expand the reach so that more santri can benefit from the programme.
