Visa and Mastercard Finally Penetrate Jakarta's Public Transport Payment System
JAKARTA – The DKI Jakarta provincial government has officially launched a ticket payment system using contactless credit cards (EMV Contactless) on the MRT Jakarta service, Wednesday (29/7/2026). The system allows users to tap in and tap out using credit cards without needing to top up a balance.
DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said the innovation will further strengthen public transport services in Jakarta. Members of the public and tourists holding Visa and Mastercard credit cards can use the MRT without having to use an electronic money card. Pramono emphasised that the innovation is the first of its kind in Indonesia.
“Today the ticket payment system using contactless credit cards, or EMV Contactless, is officially implemented on MRT Jakarta. This is the first in Indonesia to use credit cards, whether Visa, Mastercard, or later other networks,” said Pramono at the Bundaran HI Bank Jakarta MRT Station on Wednesday (29/7/2026).
According to Pramono, the innovation was made to support Jakarta’s vision as a global city. Similar systems have been implemented on public transport services in major cities around the world, such as Singapore, Tokyo, Shanghai, New York, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Sydney.
He believes the system will also make it easier for foreign tourists to access public transport in Jakarta. According to data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS), around 2.5 million foreign tourists visited Jakarta in 2024.
“Previously, if they wanted to use the MRT they had to use a special card. Now, with Visa and Mastercard, they can use those cards directly,” he said.
Pramono stated that the DKI Jakarta provincial government will continue to develop the contactless credit card ticketing system for other public transport services, such as Transjakarta and the LRT. In this way, public transport services in Jakarta will become increasingly accessible to everyone.
The launch of the service is the result of collaboration between the DKI Jakarta provincial government, Bank Indonesia (BI), PT MRT Jakarta, Bank Mandiri, Mastercard, Visa and a number of national banks. This synergy was undertaken to strengthen the digitalisation of services while expanding payment options for public transport users.
