Viral Woman Pretending to Attend Funeral, Then Steals Condolence Money in East Jakarta
The alleged act of a woman stealing condolence money in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta (Jaktim) has gone viral on social media. Police are investigating the theft case.
“We are currently investigating the case of condolence money theft in Kramat Jati by a woman,” said AKP Fadoli, Head of Criminal Investigation Unit (Kanit Reskrim) of the Kramat Jati Police Sector, as quoted by Antara, on Thursday (5 March 2026).
The incident occurred on Jalan Dukuh IV, Kampung Dukuh, Kramat Jati, East Jakarta. The suspect is believed to have carried out the act by pretending to know the family of the deceased to blend in with other mourners.
“She carried out the act by pretending to know the family of the deceased and blending in with the other mourners,” he said.
According to him, the suspect took advantage of the funeral home being crowded with mourners. When the situation was lax, the woman allegedly took condolence money that had been in her possession, placed it into her bag, and fled.
“When people were distracted, the perpetrator took the condolence money and put it into her bag before fleeing,” he said.
Police have attended the scene of the incident (TKP) to conduct initial investigations. In addition to requesting statements from the victim’s family and several witnesses, officers are also examining CCTV footage around the location.
“We have also checked the TKP to obtain statements from the victim’s family and to view the CCTV that is there,” said Fadoli.
To date, the police are still pursuing the perpetrator and investigating her identity. Fadoli also urged the public to remain vigilant, including when attending funeral gatherings, ensuring that the management of condolence money is handled by trusted individuals and closely supervised in rotation.
This case adds to the list of crimes that exploit moments of mourning. The police assure that the perpetrator will be dealt with firmly. (jbr/dhn)
