Viral Waste Pile in North Jakarta's Kali Gendong: Governor Pramono Responds

Kali Gendong in Penjaringan, North Jakarta, went viral on social media after appearing choked with piles of rubbish. The viral video showed several residents casually discarding waste. Footage seen by detikcom on Sunday (21/6/2026) showed rubbish heaped on a bridge and its surroundings, with passers-by deliberately throwing wrapped waste into the canal.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has spoken out. He said the waste pile-up in the area was partly caused by the closure of the Bantar Gebang integrated waste treatment facility (TPST). "Indeed, because Bantar Gebang had some problems recently, waste pile-ups occurred in several places," Pramono told reporters after the groundbreaking for the Dukuh Atas pedestrian deck in Setia Budi, South Jakarta, on Sunday (21/6/2026).

Nevertheless, Pramono stated that the issue is now being addressed. He noted that the waste pile-up problem has visibly diminished. "But alhamdulillah, the handling can now be managed in almost all areas experiencing accumulation, and it is gradually decreasing," he explained.

Pramono elaborated that Jakarta dispatches waste using 1,200 trucks daily, amounting to roughly 9,000 tonnes. He said the current figure has not yet reached 1,200 but is approaching 1,000 truckloads per day. "Waste sorting also significantly reduces the amount of waste that must be transported to Bantar Gebang. And as is known, we are targeting that by 1 August, only residual waste will be sent to Bantar Gebang," he added.
