Viral Video Shows Passengers Falling on Escalator at Bekasi Station, Three Injured
A viral video showing several KRL passengers falling on an escalator at platform 6 or 7 of Bekasi Station has prompted an explanation from KAI Commuter Indonesia (KCI). The company stated the incident began when one passenger fell, triggering a domino effect.
‘The incident was caused by a passenger using the escalator on platform 6/7 at Bekasi Station who fell and hit other passengers positioned below them,’ said KCI VP Corporate Secretary Karina Amanda to detikcom on Tuesday (23/6/2026).
Based on the circulating video, a number of passengers can be seen holding onto the escalator, while others appear to be stepping off it. Several sandals and shoes were left behind on the escalator. Officers were also seen assisting passengers on the escalator.
KCI Public Relations Manager Leza Arlan explained that the incident began when a station security officer on duty at platform 6/7 saw a passenger lose their balance while using the escalator. The passenger then fell and accidentally hit two other passengers who were behind or below them. KCI denied that the escalator had malfunctioned.
‘So it was not because the escalator malfunctioned or suddenly moved backwards due to damage or a system error, as has been widely reported,’ Leza clarified.
The security officer who witnessed the incident quickly took emergency action by pressing the emergency stop button to halt the escalator immediately and prevent further unwanted incidents.
KCI urged passengers to exercise caution when using escalators and manual stairs at stations. The company reaffirmed its commitment to safety and passenger service, ensuring that the escalator was not experiencing any technical issues.
‘We will also continue to ensure that escalator facilities are in normal condition and free from technical disruptions before operating for train passengers,’ Leza said.
Three people sustained minor injuries in the incident. Station officers promptly evacuated the three passengers using wheelchairs to the Bekasi Station health post for medical treatment. Based on examination by health post staff, the three passengers suffered minor injuries, including bruises and abrasions on their hands, elbows, arms, and knees. After receiving first aid and intensive care, their condition was declared improved and stable.
‘We are concerned about the incident experienced by the passengers. All affected passengers have received proper medical treatment and are currently in stable condition,’ Leza stated. The passengers subsequently continued their journey on the KA 112 (Sawunggalih) long-distance train, escorted and accompanied by Bekasi Station security personnel until they boarded the train.
