Viral Video Shows Debt Collectors Stabbing Lawyer During Vehicle Repossession in South Tangerang, Police Investigate
A viral video has emerged showing a violent incident carried out by a group of men described as debt collectors, known locally as “mata elang” (matel), in the South Tangerang area. The debt collectors allegedly stabbed a client, who is a practising lawyer, during an attempt to collect on a debt.
The video, which has spread widely across social media, shows a group of debt collectors arriving at a client’s home in the Palem Semi Housing Estate in Karawaci.
The narrative accompanying the video indicates the incident began with an altercation between the perpetrators and the victim. Three individuals claiming to represent a leasing company allegedly forced their way into the victim’s property and attempted to repossess his vehicle.
However, the victim refused to hand over the car, asserting that the forced repossession procedure did not comply with legal requirements. The confrontation ultimately led to the perpetrators stabbing the victim.
When asked for confirmation, South Tangerang Police Chief AKBP Boy Jumalolo verified that the stabbing by the group of debt collectors had indeed taken place.
“That is correct, there was an incident involving a group of debt collectors who committed assault in Kelapa Dua,” Boy said, as reported by Antara on Tuesday (23/2/2026).
Boy stated that the Criminal Investigation Unit of South Tangerang Police had visited the crime scene and interviewed several witnesses in order to take action against the group of debt collectors responsible for the stabbing.
“Several witnesses have already been interviewed to facilitate enforcement action and the arrest of these arrogant debt collectors,” he said.
Additionally, Boy Jumalolo visited the victim, who is currently receiving treatment for stab wounds at the Tangerang Regency General Hospital.
“We will take firm action against the group of debt collectors who have caused disturbance in the South Tangerang Police jurisdiction,” he said.
