Viral Video of Unair Students' Lewd Act in Classroom, Campus Prepares Sanctions
A video showing a pair of students allegedly committing an indecent act in a classroom at Airlangga University (Unair) in Surabaya, East Java, has gone viral on social media. The video spread rapidly across various social media platforms and messaging applications. Airlangga University confirmed that the video involves internal students. The case is currently being handled by the Ethics Commission to investigate the entire sequence of events, including the recording and distribution of the video.
The circulating video, which is 2 minutes and 15 seconds long, shows a man and a woman engaging in a lewd act inside a classroom when the campus appeared quiet. Head of the Public Relations and Protocol Centre (PHMP) at Unair, Pulung Siswantara, confirmed the campus had received information about the video and verified that the individuals in the recording are Unair students. “The university has received information regarding the circulating video. They are fellow students,” Pulung said.
Initial investigations indicate the incident occurred in one of Unair’s classrooms last week. Pulung confirmed the location was in one of the university’s lecture buildings and involved students from the internal campus community. “In a classroom of one of our buildings. Fellow students, the incident happened last week,” he stated.
Based on the video, the couple appeared unaware of another person’s presence in the room, allowing their activity to continue. About one and a half minutes later, both seemed to realise someone was at the location recording their actions.
After receiving information about the video, the campus immediately proceeded according to internal procedures. The case was handed over to the Ethics Commission for further examination before the university makes a decision. Pulung said the entire process is currently underway according to the mechanisms in place within the campus. “Currently, the case is being handled by the Ethics Commission according to the applicable mechanisms,” he said.
Pulung revealed that the internal investigation team is moving quickly so that the academic legal status of the two students can be issued soon. “Sanctions will be issued by the Ethics Commission after the examination is complete. It probably won’t be long now,” he stated. In addition to the hearing, the two individuals—who are currently inactive from campus activities as it coincides with the semester break—have had their parents summoned for questioning. “The parents are also being examined. Because these children are still under parental supervision, we have brought the parents in to explore the background of this behaviour,” Pulung explained. “Since it is currently the holiday period, they are indeed not active. And they are currently being examined by the Ethics Commission,” he added. Although firm sanctions are assured to be forthcoming, Pulung declined to disclose the type of punishment to be imposed, including the potential for severe suspension or other worst-case sanctions. “We will see after this, the results of the examination,” he concluded.
This moral transgression has become a major evaluation for Unair internally. Pulung claimed the campus has actually installed digital surveillance devices in almost every room as an early anticipatory measure against acts violating moral norms. “In almost all classrooms at Airlangga University, there is CCTV and there is indeed supervision. Through the Prevention and Handling of Violence in Higher Education (PPKPT), every time they first enter Airlangga University, they are always given socialisation about preventing such things that violate ethics,” he explained. This preventive measure is also reinforced by binding official university regulations. “We at Airlangga University even have rules about ethical behaviour,” Pulung concluded.
