Viral Video of Dozens in Medan Convoy Armed with Sharp Weapons, Police Speak Out
A video showing dozens of youths carrying sharp weapons and riding motorcycles in convoy in the Pulo Brayan Flyover area, West Medan District, Medan City, has gone viral on social media. In the circulating footage, the group is seen crossing the flyover en masse. They are suspected of looking for targets on the road before eventually stopping at the roadside. Shortly afterwards, several members of the group are seen chasing a passing motorcyclist. The victim, a man, tried to evade them, but they pursued him while brandishing sharp weapons. From the video, the perpetrators appear to threaten and attack the victim. The incident occurred during the daytime, drawing attention as it took place while public activity was still ongoing. The narrative accompanying the video upload claims the group are robbers. They operate in groups to target vehicles and residents’ valuables. The video uploader wrote, ‘This is Medan’s motorcycle scene, boss! A motorcycle gang affiliated with robbers on the Brayan flyover in Medan showing strength and challenging the authorities, often operating as an armed robbery gang targeting motorcycles and residents’ valuables at precise locations.’ West Medan Police Chief, Kompol Dr Made Wira Suhendra, stated that the group of robbers was merely passing through his jurisdiction and that there was no attack on road users. ‘Pulo Brayan is a border area between Marelan, East Medan, Helvetia, and West Medan. So, when they passed through the West Medan area, they were just passing through, so there was no attack in our area,’ he told CNNIndonesia.com on Tuesday (7/7). He mentioned that the incident occurred in June 2026 but went viral on social media in early July 2026. ‘The incident happened in June; the attack was not the recent one. At that time, they were just passing through, so they were indeed a group moving from the Belawan area, passing through three locations. Passing through East Medan, West Medan, and finally Helvetia,’ he explained. According to him, the authorities did receive reports from the public when the group of robbers passed through. However, when the police arrived at the location, the group was already gone. ‘We did receive information from the 110 hotline. Then officers went to the location, but they were no longer found because they were just passing through,’ he stated. When asked about the robbers carrying sharp weapons and attacking residents, he acknowledged that an investigation had been conducted by the Medan Police. ‘But for further details regarding the investigation, a special team has been formed by the Police Chief. Perhaps you could confirm with the Jatanras team,’ he elaborated. He added that the West Medan Police only carried out preventive measures. Additionally, the police have conducted patrols in several areas. ‘However, from our police sector, we are implementing preventive steps, patrolling the local areas,’ he explained. Separately, Medan Police Chief, Kombes Pol Jean Calvijn Simanjuntak, when contacted by CNNIndonesia.com regarding the viral video, had not yet provided a response.
