Viral Video of Cengkareng Police Allegedly Watching Football While Citizen Reports Crime

A video circulating on social media has caused a stir, showing a citizen claiming she had to wait while police officers at the Cengkareng Police Station appeared to be watching a football match. The footage sparked accusations of neglect towards public reports. In response, the West Jakarta Metro Police provided an official clarification. Head of Public Relations for the West Jakarta Metro Police, Adjutant Commissioner (AKP) Wisnu Wirawan, dismissed the allegations of neglect. He explained that the incident occurred on Sunday (28/6) at around 11.50 p.m. Western Indonesia Time. A woman arrived at the Cengkareng Police Station to report an alleged case of violence. However, at the same time, the Integrated Service Centre (SPKT) officer was already processing another report that had been filed earlier. “Before the woman arrived, there was another report being processed by the Cengkareng Police Station, namely a report of motor vehicle theft,” Wisnu said when contacted in Jakarta on Monday evening. The SPKT officer then contacted the Criminal Investigation Unit duty officer to inform them of two consecutive reports: the vehicle theft and the alleged domestic violence. Because the vehicle theft report was being processed, the complainant in the violence case was asked to wait briefly. Regarding the presence of several officers seen watching a football match in the video, Wisnu stressed that they were not the officers handling the public report. “The members seen in the video were the Supervisory Officer (Pawas) and members who were about to conduct a stationary patrol briefing in the Cengkareng area. So, they were not the members handling the report,” he asserted. Shortly after, the siren for the standby briefing was sounded as a sign to begin raid preparations. However, upon hearing the siren, the woman complainant immediately left the location without notifying the officers. “Due to impatience, the woman made the video and left the police station without filing a police report. That is according to the statement from the Police Chief in his clarification,” Wisnu added. The Cengkareng Police Station stated they have attempted to establish communication with the account owner who uploaded the video. Clarifications have been conveyed both through the comments section and via direct message. Wisnu reiterated that there was no element of neglect in this incident. He also urged the public to continue trusting police services and to use the 110 call centre if they encounter any security disturbances. “We, the police, will follow up on every public report promptly and provide an appropriate response,” Wisnu concluded.
