Viral Unethical MPLS Twibbon in Denpasar, SMK PGRI 5 Provides Special Guidance

The public in Bali was recently stirred by a viral social media post of a twibbon from a vocational high school (SMK) in Denpasar. The photo sparked controversy because it showed prospective new students in revealing clothing and poses deemed unethical for pupils, particularly within the context of the School Environment Introduction Period (MPLS). In response, SMK PGRI 5 Denpasar took swift action. The school’s head, Nuning Kurniawati, confirmed that the matter had been addressed by asking the students involved to delete the post and replace their photos. Nuning stressed that the school had provided clear guidance and visual examples regarding the standard of photos permitted for upload to the twibbon. She denied any directive from the school to wear inappropriate attire. “We have provided video and photo examples of what should be uploaded, so it is impossible that the school suggested the use of inappropriate clothing,” Nuning said when confirmed in Denpasar on Tuesday (14/7/2026). Although guidance was given, Nuning revealed that the students in question had questioned the school’s policy. The investigation is currently slightly hampered because the students’ social media accounts have been switched to private mode and use different identities. The case also drew the attention of Bali DPRD Commission IV member, Anak Agung Bagus Tri Candra Arka. The man familiarly known as Gung Cok emphasised that the responsibility for educating students’ morals cannot be placed entirely on schools. According to the Golkar politician, the duration of teacher-student meetings at school is very limited, making the role of parents the primary foundation in shaping a child’s character and mentality from an early age. “At school, teachers only meet with students for a short time. The role of parents is extremely important in educating a child’s morals and mentality,” Gung Cok asserted. As a preventive measure, relevant parties will conduct investigations and provide guidance to various schools currently holding MPLS. The aim is to prevent similar incidents from recurring and to ensure students use social media more wisely during the school orientation period.
