Viral Pocong Impostor Captured by Residents in Tangerang

A video showing the arrest of a person alleged to be a pocong impersonator has gone viral on social media, drawing public attention in Tangerang, Banten. Police are now investigating the maker and spreader of the video.

In the circulating video, several residents are seen detaining a person suspected of masquerading as a pocong in the early hours of Wednesday, 20 May. The situation heated up as the suspect nearly became the target of mob violence.

The Public Relations Head for the Tangerang City Police, IPDA Sandro, said authorities could not yet confirm the location or the veracity of the event depicted in the viral video.

“People are just making content to attract attention,” Sandro said on Wednesday, 20 May.

Nevertheless, the police are continuing to investigate the video, including tracing the account that first disseminated the content on social media.

“That’s why I want to delve into who spread the video,” he asserted.

Previously, the so-called ‘pocong’ terror acts had caused uproar and alarm among residents in the Tangerang area, Banten.

Tangerang City Police Chief, Kombes Pol Andi Muhammad Indra Waspada Amirullah, said the mystic claim is suspected to be misinformation or not factually true.

“So do not easily believe information that has not been validated and do not spread rumours whose veracity is unclear,” he told Antara on Wednesday, 20 May.

According to him, based on police investigations, the ‘pocong’ terror acts are suspected to be used as a modus operandi by a group engaging in theft or robbery by frightening residents.

Thus, in the midst of public panic and complacency, the irresponsible group exploited the situation.
