Viral Pac-Man Zebra Crossing Sparks Calls for More
JAKARTA - The rigid white lines of the zebra crossing now appear “alive” with the presence of the iconic game character, Pac-Man, on Jalan Prof. Dr. Soepomo in Tebet, South Jakarta.
This creative action went viral on social media at the end of March. Its presence has sparked curiosity among passers-by and even prompted broader discussions about crossing facilities in the capital.
Behind this unique repainting is Ijoel, a content creator known for his concern over traffic and environmental issues in Jakarta.
He initiated this movement as a form of care for public facilities, particularly for the safety of pedestrians.
“The government has actually done something before. It even went viral too, with calls for it. The governor and deputy governor have even met with us and discussed this. They invited collaboration,” he told Kompas.com recently.
“However, from the private sector and others, there hasn’t been any yet,” he added.
Ijoel explained that after the Pac-Man zebra crossing phenomenon went viral, strong demands have emerged from the public for better crossing facilities.
“Now, many residents are telling me, ‘There’s none here, bro, try painting it.’ It’s like they’re demanding it. Some even think it’s free,” he said.
“Actually, this is also due to residents’ urging. They complained, why isn’t there a zebra crossing here yet. Basically, they just want the problem solved quickly,” Ijoel stated.
Therefore, synergy between the government, communities, and the public is hoped to be continuously enhanced.
The goal is for public facilities, including zebra crossings, not only to function well but also to increase awareness and comfort for all road users.
