Viral Mountain of Rubbish on East Jakarta Roadside Now Cleared

A video showing piles of rubbish strewn along a roadside in the West Cakung area of East Jakarta went viral on social media. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that the waste heap has now been removed. Footage showed a stretch of rubbish approximately 100 metres long encroaching onto the road, disrupting passing motorists. Only one lane remained passable for motorcycles, with the pile reaching heights of one to two metres. The accumulated waste was predominantly household refuse wrapped in plastic bags. Residents had been dumping their rubbish at the Albo Temporary Disposal Site (TPS) until it overflowed onto the road. A total of 54 tonnes of waste were transported away after the Jakarta Provincial Government received reports from the public. Pramono said he immediately ordered his staff to clean up the location upon receiving the report. “The clean-up process has been completed. However, this incident serves as a reminder that the waste problem in Jakarta remains a challenge, partly due to the reduced storage capacity at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Site (TPST),” Pramono said. He also urged residents not to litter in order to keep the capital clean.
