A viral social media narrative alleging that visitors to Malioboro in Yogyakarta were charged double parking fees due to parking attendant (jukir) shift changes has prompted a response from city authorities. The Yogyakarta City Government through the Transportation Office confirmed that the incident involved illegal parking.

The narrative was shared via Instagram account @merapi_uncover. In the post, a visitor complained of paying parking fees twice. Additionally, the visitor expressed frustration at the parking attendant’s insistence on demanding additional money after discovering his helmet had fallen and been damaged.

According to the account, a tourist reported an unpleasant experience when parking his motorcycle near Hamzah Batik in the Malioboro area. The visitor, whose identity was anonymised, described feeling exploited through a “shift change” scheme. The complaints included: paying Rp3,000 on arrival and being charged an additional Rp2,000 upon departure by a different attendant citing a shift change; discovering his helmet had fallen and was damaged, indicating inadequate supervision; and the attendant’s refusal to apologise and continued insistence on collecting the additional fee.

Imanudin Aziz, head of parking at the Yogyakarta Transportation Office, confirmed that the office had followed up on the complaint. He stated that the parking location in question was unlicensed and therefore classified as illegal parking (parkir liar). Aziz indicated that the case has been referred to Polresta Jogja (Yogyakarta Police) for further investigation and action.
