Viral Kebaya-Clad Man at 1 Suro Parade: Mangkunegaran Palace Denies Giving Permission

A man wearing a kebaya participating in the 1 Suro night procession at Puro Mangkunegaran has gone viral. The Puro Mangkunegaran procession committee has confirmed that they never granted permission for this.

As reported by detikJateng, the Instagram account @mbulnyandert uploaded a post featuring three individuals wearing kebaya. In one of the Instagram screenshots, the uploader claimed to have received permission to wear the kebaya.

“Mother @sarawijayanto, please reprimand this child. Let them know what is appropriate and what is not. This is a sacred event, not a fashion show. With all due respect, Madam. Gusti Sura @ancsud, I seek your permission,” the account wrote, as quoted on Thursday (18/06/2026).

Through his personal Threads account, the Chairperson of the 1 Suro Be 1960 Mangkunegaran Organising Committee, GRAj. Ancillasura Marina Sudjiwo, also known as Gusti Sura, denied having given permission to the man in the kebaya.

“Mangkunegaran has issued guidelines regarding attire for the 1 Sura traditional ritual; the 1 Sura BE 1960 organising committee has never provided permission, dispensation, or special treatment to any party,” said Sura on Thursday (18/06/2026).

Sura expressed hope that the 1 Suro night commemoration could become a part of communal life and strengthen the relationship between the community and cultural values.

“Hopefully, the spirit of reflection, order, and mutual respect present in the 1 Sura Be 1960 night commemoration can continue to be part of our shared life and strengthen the bond between the community and the cultural values passed down through generations,” he explained.
